01 Products: 01_4 Solar Charge Regulators

Solar charge controllers or solar charge regulators are similar to the voltage regulator in your cars alternator. They regulate the current (amperage) and the voltage between your solar panel and your battery. Most monocrystalline solar panels give out around 16 – 20 volts depending upon the amount of sunlight they are receiving. Subsequently, it is very easy to damage expensive batteries with overcharging. The majority of batteries need a charge of around 14 volts in order to become fully charged.

Monocrystalline solar panels although rated at 12 volts in fact produce between 16 and 20 volts. The reason for this is that if a panel was designed to produce 12 volts. They would do so only under perfect conditions, such as when cool and exposed to full light. Solar panels need to provide usable voltage in low light conditions and high temperatures. A fully charged battery is around 12.7 volts when not under load and around 13.7 when being charged. Solar panels need to be able to give at least this amount of voltage in order to perform their duty.

Our charge controllers use PWM, this stands for pulse width modulation. This is an excellent method of float charging your batteries. Instead of a constant charge being sent to your batteries from the charge regulator, it gives out short charging pulses. The charge regulator is constantly checking the state of charge of the battery. This allows the charge regulator to determine the frequency of the pulses it is sending. For example; in a fully charged battery, with no load, the charge regulator will send a charge to your battery every few seconds. This is called the floating charge. In a battery that is not fully charged the pulses will be longer or continuous. Between pulses the charge regulator senses your batteries state of charge and adjusts the frequency of the next pulse. PWM is an excellent method of charging your batteries.

Xantrex Digital Meter

This is a  digital meter for Xantrex C35, C40, and C60 charge controllers.

CM, CMR/50, CMR/100-A back-lit meter which continuously displays: battery voltage, DC amperage, cumulative amp hours and amp hours since last reset. CM mounts on front of C Series, C35, C40 and C60, charge controllers. The remote meters CMR/50 and CMR/100 use simple telephone type plug-in connectors. 50 ft. (15 m) or 100 ft. (30 m) cable included. If used with a wind turbine, this will only measure voltage.

Xantrex BTS Battery Temperature Sensor

Xantrex Battery Temperature Sensor (BTS) comes in a 15 ft. (4.5 m) or 35 ft. (11 m) cable with standard telephone type connectors is included and is designed for use with DR and UX Inverters and C Series Charge Controllers. The BTS mounts on a terminal post of a battery in a bank or on the side of a battery and measures its temperature. It sends precise information to the charger or charge controller, which automatically adjusts voltage to ensure full battery charge depending on the ambient temperature of your battery installation.
